Brownies from Scratch

I have a paper due in a few days so clearly tonight was a night for baking. I was completely unwilling to go to the store for supplies, but needed something sweet.  After lots of investigation online, I figured I had enough ingredients for brownies! I found this recipe. Seemingly the only one that didn’t require chocolate chips (which required going to the store).  Like usual I didn’t check to make sure I had all the ingredients before starting and low and behold we were out of brown sugar.  The internet said I could use white and molasses but molasses isn’t something I enjoy or keep around the house so I decided to use the maple syrup I bought the other day.  Little known fact, maple syrup in England is difficult to find, not very good, and costs a small fortune. So I threw some of that in (probably three tablespoons) with the 1 ½ cups of white sugar. I think they turned out pretty good for completely guessing with the sugar situation!  Next time I’ll try them with brown sugar so we can compare.  Also they’re pretty gooey even though I cooked them ten minutes longer than the recipe suggested and the knife came out clean (in retrospect it might have been the pan).

Roommate rating: 4 out of 5 wooden spoons

Update:
I took the left over brownies to my weekly dinner with Jess and Sabrina (she keeps a food blog here) and we devoured the rest of the pan.  After the sat for a day, the gooeyness subsided and the amazingness remained.
